Language skills: Many training occupations require a good level of German (usually B1/B2).

Application and selection procedure: Applications are made directly to the training companies. This is usually done via the apprenticeship search on websites such as Ausbildung.de or the job exchange of the Federal Employment Agency.

Visa and residence permit: For non-European applicants, a training visa is required, which must be applied for before the start of training.
Training allowance: In Germany, there is a statutory system for training allowances that you can use to cover your living expenses.

Work in Germany

Applying for a job in Germany from abroad can be a little more complex, but here are the most important points:

Recognition of professional qualifications: if you have learned a profession that is regulated in Germany, you may need to have your qualification recognised in Germany. There is an official recognition office for foreign professional qualifications for this purpose.

Language skills: Many professions require a good level of German. This varies depending on the occupational field and employer, but as a rule you should have at least B1/B2.

Application: You can apply online via job portals such as StepStone, Indeed, LinkedIn or directly on company websites. Applications should be submitted in German or English, depending on which language is preferred by the company.

Visa and residence permit: You will need a work visa or an EU Blue Card (for highly qualified professionals) to work in Germany. You must apply for this before travelling to Germany.

Required documents: The usual application documents include
CV (ideally in German)
Letter of motivation
References and certificates (translated and notarised)
Employment references (if required)

Study in Germany

In order to apply for a degree programme in Germany, several steps and requirements must be observed:

Language skills: Most degree programmes require a good knowledge of German (usually at least B2 or C1). You must present a language certificate such as the TestDaF or DSH.

Applying via Uni-Assist or directly: Many German universities work with Uni-Assist (a central organisation for processing applications from international students). In other cases, applications can be submitted directly to the university.

Visa and residence permit: If you come from a non-EU country, you will need a student visa, which must be applied for in good time.

Proof of financial means: You must prove that you have enough money to cover your living expenses during your studies. This can be in the form of a bank balance, a scholarship or a declaration of commitment,
